Marian iPod Class

Podcasts

Podcast Assignment- I subscribed to the Best of Mike and Mike from ESPN, because I miss most of it everyday, and I hate the commercials! I really like being able to listen to the guys talk sports with their guests. It is great to hear what you missed at your convenience.

For Education, I subscribed the the Math Dude's Quick and Dirty Math Tips. I teach special education math, and my kids could use all the tips I can find them. The guys who make them makes math kind of fun. The kids thought it was ok, but it was hard to grasp the concept without seeing the concept.

My Podcast- Morning Announcements

This podcast (Vodcast) I created to allow my students to view how to solve discriminants in my Algebra class. It came in handy when two of my students were gone, and I didn't have to reteach the lesson!

Student PodCasts
My students created these in my Algebra Class explaining how to solve quadratic equations in different ways.

iPod Websites

1. iEAR.org This website was built by a teacher. It has reviews of iPod apps, examples, and lesson ideas. Any teacher can become an app reviewer. The site breaks things down into categories, and is pretty cool. The best part is that was created by teachers for teachers!

2 iLearn Ebook. This website has an ebook on it that has a ton of resources for using an iPod in the classroom. It talks about the best app for different subjects, which iPod is best for your class, and tons of articles on how to integrate iPods into the classroom.

3. iPod Slide Show This site has a slide show with resources for iPods. It includes links to the resources, with things like free legal music downloads.

4. Research Article This article was written for Principals. It discusses the many uses, advantages, and disadvantages of using iPods in the classroom. Good resource to take to admins.

5. iPod Video Great Video about using iPods in the classroom. A little history, and a great presentation overall. Very cool.

iPod Apps

Personal
1. Let's Golf- This is a very fun golf app. It was $5, but you can play 4 different courses by yourself or against others on the same wifi network. It's great for killing time on a rainy day when you can't golf for real!

2. Catan- $4.99 Those of you who have played the board game Catan will love this app. It is awesome. You can play against people by pass'n'play or against computer opponents. It is a strategy game like risk, and is a ton of fun. I hope they add wifi support so my wife and I can play without passing the iPod.

3. Pandora Radio- I love Pandora for when I have WiFi access, and I don't want to listen to what is on my iPod. The music sounds great, and I get to custom make a station just for me that plays the kind of music I like or for the mood I'm in. Great App and it is free!

4. ESPN Scorecenter- Great app for sports fans. You get up to the minute coverage of any of your favorite teams and sports. You can customize it, and get alerts if you want.

5. Tap Word- I really like this one for killing time. You have to find as many words by connecting letters in the time allowed. It is a challenge, but it is also good for the brain!

Educational Apps
1. mPage- mPage is an app that allows users access to their Moodle accounts to view what is going on, assignments and so on. Very neat app.

2. iStudiez Pro- $1.99 This is a great app for students, and teachers to keep track of their schedule, and workloads, assignments, completed assignments, and so on. This replaces the nasty agenda thing ewww! Help your kids become organized, and never forget what they need to get done again.

3. My spell Test- $2.99 This is a neat little app that I happened upon when trying to help on of my students with spelling tests. You can load your own words in it, and record how the word is said, as sentence using the word, the meaning or all of that using the mic and record feature. Then the kids take spelling tests and get scored on them. Pretty Cool!

4. MSciGrCalc- What a name huh? This is a great scientific, graphing, equation, calculator all with reference of what certain formulas are and you just have to enter the equations as you see them on your paper and they can be solved. Great for checking work, or helping that stumped student. Plus it is only $1.99. I don't have a neat video or picture to go with this one.

5. Dragon Dictation and Search- These apps are great for kids to help them search for things quickly by voice, especially if they are poor spellers or have poor written skills, but a great verbally. Dictation allows them the speak what they would like to type, then copy, paste and email it to themselves. Great for spelling words or writing paragraphs.

Reflection- I have been using an iPod touch for over a year now. I really like it because it is so versatile. I have used it in my classroom for audio books, and played some Scrabble with my students here and there. I see my self using them much more now that we are relaxing the rules to allow kids to bring them into school. In fact, I have written their use into several IEPs this year. From organization with iStudiez Pro, to calculator use, and flash card building. I plan on taking the iPad class this summer as well because we now have 20 iPads to use in special ed. I know they will get used daily, and I'm very excited to start using them. I feel that I will have no problems integrating them into my teaching in such a way that they enhance learning and engagement, but also are not just fluff to entertain.

Assignment 7- See above Videos

Assignment 8- Call of the Wild - This story is available on Stanza a ereader for the IPod/Pad. My kids would really enjoy this ebook, and I could really like to use this for them to read next year. It still needs to be added to the Stanza cart though.
Call of the Wild free audiobook. Now the kids can read and listen to the book!

Assignment 9 Podcasting in Education- I think this would be great to have so that teachers can view different ways to integrate podcasting into the classroom.
